The 50 State Rescue Challenge: Iowa Edition

At Cause for Paws, we’re on a mission:

Get a pet adopted in every state.

This week’s spotlight falls on The Hawkeye State: Iowa and Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) stands as Iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, with a rich history dating back to 1926.

Based in Des Moines, this organization has made a significant impact, helping over one million pets in need throughout its existence.

ARL offers a comprehensive range of services aimed at improving animal welfare in the community. These include pet adoption programs, humane education initiatives, pet behavior training, spay/neuter services, and animal cruelty intervention.

With its longstanding presence and wide-ranging efforts, ARL continues to play a crucial role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals across Iowa, while also educating the public on responsible pet ownership and animal care.

🐾Velma🐾

Velma

Meet Velma, a 1-year-old female Terrier with a beautiful grey coat, weighing 58 pounds. Currently at ARL Animal Services, Velma is spayed and ready for adoption.

Velma is a busy pup who loves connecting with people through play and activities, thriving on both physical and mental challenges. She warms up quickly with food and treats, and once comfortable, she adores pets all over. Velma loves to learn and has excellent focus, making her a joy to train, especially with treats involved.

She may take some time to warm up to new dogs and prefers a slow introduction, enjoying the company of dogs with a similar play style. Young, noisy, or busy children can be overwhelming for her, so a mature home is recommended.

If you're looking for a fun and trainable companion, Velma is ready to meet you! Adopt Velma today and start a wonderful journey together.🐾⛰️

🐾Lola🐾

Lola

Meet Lola, an adorable 1-year-old female Labrador Retriever with a beautiful brown coat, weighing 57 pounds. Currently in foster care, Lola is spayed and ready for adoption.

Lola is a big cuddle bug who loves being up on the couch and enjoys playing with all kinds of toys. She's a little nervous around new people, often barking initially but quickly warming up once she investigates. Outside, she does well with recall and is becoming more confident in exploring on her own.

She’s making great progress with crate training, sleeping in her crate at night and being comfortable in it during the day. While she does well with kids, she can be a bit bouncy and needs to work on her mouth manners. However, she is very treat motivated and learns quickly.

Around other dogs, Lola can be awkward and tends to guard her toys, though this has never escalated beyond a growl. She enjoys playing chase in the yard, especially when a ball is involved, but doesn't wrestle with other dogs. A slow introduction to resident dogs is recommended.

Lola is curious about cats but hasn’t had direct access to them, so a slow introduction is advised. She's also been around chickens, sometimes chasing them and sometimes leaving them alone, so monitoring is needed around fowl.

This sweet girl is on daily medication to prevent urine leakage, which has shown improvement in her foster home. She may need to continue this medication and might require ongoing medical care for this condition.

To meet Lola, email [email protected] to schedule an appointment. She’s ready to bring joy and companionship to her forever home!🐾🐕

🐾Arya🐾

Arya

Meet Arya, a beautiful 4-year-old female American Pit Bull Terrier with a tan coat, weighing 66 pounds. Arya is spayed and currently residing at ARL Main.

Arya loves going on walks and does best with a harness. She needs a home with teens and up right now. Arya may take some time to warm up to new dogs and may prefer some dogs over others, so a slow introduction to new dogs is recommended.

This busy pup thrives on connecting with people through play and other activities. She enjoys physical activity and mental challenges to keep her body and brain busy. If you're looking for a playful and active companion, Arya might be the perfect fit for your family.
