Older dogs make up a large portion of animals surrendered to shelters in search of loving homes. Unfortunately, they often present unique challenges when it comes to finding willing adoptive families.

This tricky reality came to light through the heartwarming story we're sharing this week: the tale of Dax, a 20-year-old Weimaraner, who was surrendered to a Florida shelter near the end of his earthly life.

Dax recently arrived at the Big Dog Rescue Ranch, burdened by a host of medical conditions, including arthritis that severely limited his mobility.

Given his complex medical history, he needed a miracle to find a new forever home.

Fortunately, the compassionate team at BDRR gave Dax a whole lotta love and care, and tirelessly searched to find him a new family.

Natalie Rubino, the Director of Digital Marketing at BDRR, shared, “We really wanted to make sure to hand-pick the right person.”

“They needed to be the perfect fit and have everything that would meet Dax’s needs in what we consider his retirement or end-of-life care.”

Following a brief stay at BDRR, Dax was finally ready to transition to his new home.

Dax's new family was well aware of the complexity of his medical needs and limited mobility.

And with 2 other dogs, they anticipated a challenging adjustment period. They even hired a professional dog trainer to make the transition easier.

But to their astonishment, neither Dax's new family nor BDRR needed the services of the dog trainer!

Dax seamlessly fit in to his new home with joy, and his new family and dog siblings fell in love with him from day one.

It was clear—Dax was the missing piece in their family puzzle, and came along just at the right time.

As Natalie Rubino beautifully put it, “This was a very special match for all of us here [at BDRR],” Rubino said. “We all love him so much.”

Thanks to the assistance of his doggy wheelchair and a specially designed orthopedic bed, Dax admirably keeps up with his younger dog siblings.

Dax's adoption in his twilight years serves as a poignant reminder that dogs make wonderful companions at any age, and possess a unique charm, especially in their golden years.

In honor of our guy Dax, we encourage you to consider adopting a senior dog in need of compassion and love!

One of the most underrated tricks you can teach your pup?

How to stay!

Most dog owners have mastered teaching commands like “sit” and “roll over”.

But teaching your pup how to “stay” can be a real challenge.

This command can keep your furry friend safe, so it’s important to have it down solid!

When it comes to dog training videos, the McCann Dog Trainers are second to none.

Grab your pup, some treats, and start practicing alongside them!

🇺🇲 The 50 State Rescue Challenge: Colorado Edition

At Cause for Paws, we’re on a mission:

Get a pet adopted in every state.

Every week, we cover a different state, and share resources on how you can help adopt in your own state.

This week, we’re heading to the mountains of Colorado! 🏔️

In Colorado's capital city, Denver, you’ll find Dumb Friends League (yes, that’s really their name! 😂).

They’re a non-profit animal shelter in the Denver area, working tirelessly to end pet homelessness and animal suffering.

One unique feature of Dumb Friends League (DFL) is that they to keep pets with their families!

Many pets get surrendered to shelters when they have medical emergencies and their families can’t afford the vet bill.

DFL provides subsidized veterinary care to pets and their families who need it, helping to avoid unnecessary separation.

If you live near Denver, definitely check out the amazing crew at DFL to see the incredible work they’re doing in their community!

P.S. Not a Colorado resident? No worries, we got you!

🐾 Paw Profiles: 3 remarkable rescues ready for adoption
